Death by Why

We have entered the Why stage. Oh, it's painful. I can't say one thing without being asked why. Even the simplest things, like why is an eyebrow called an eyebrow? Who knows? But my toddler thinks I should and do! Why is asked for eating dinner, standing on furniture, jumping on the bed, rolling the window up/down in the car. It's enough to drive you crazy. I don't want to say, "Because", but honestly for some of the why's I can't come up with an answer. We are off to Baltimore to the Inner Harbor and Aquarium tomorrow. Yeah! or as Allison would say, Why?

Memorial Day Weekend

It was so nice to have a family three day weekend. Brent's traveling has been crazy and to have him home for three days was wonderful. Saturday morning we took Bailey for a walk and then hit our yard. Brent really enjoys doing yardwork, yeah for me, and he worked on moving mulch and dirt out of the front yard and to the big. Via the John Deere of course! Allison and I pulled weeds and cleaned out the flower beds then became distracted and blew bubbles and did sidewalk chalk. We were so exhausted that the thought of making dinner was too much to handle, so we went to dinner at Bonefish Grill. Yum. On Sunday, Brent went to a Wounded Warriors event for work and Allison and I organized and rotated toys. Next, it was time to get ready for a barbecue with family and friends. Allison was given the job to ice the cupcakes. Not sure if any really got iced, but she had a blast.

The kids had so much fun playing in the backyard with the swing set, bubbles, beach balls and riding in the car.
Last but not least on Monday, we got up walked Bailey again and then let Allison play in the backyard with the sprinkler and the sand/water table. So enjoyable to have us all together! Thanks to all of the service men and women. Thanks, Dad! Thanks, Mike!

Our Flower Girl

I am a little tardy in blogging about Aunt Sue and Uncle Russ' Wedding, but Allison had a virus this week and we are just emerging from viral outbreak. We headed up to PA on Thursday the 14th. I told Allison that Mommy and Daddy were picking her up at school and we were on our way to Pennsylvania. She was so excited about the trip that she kept telling her teachers that I was picking her up after morning snack, then after lunch, then after nap. It was also without incident, about 20 minutes after I dropped her off, I got a phone call from her teacher telling me that she had fallen, split her upper gums and hit her nose. Great for pictures! It was definitely much better than I imagined, she had a small bruise on the bridge of her nose when we picked her up, no biggie. She was quite anxious to get in the car. We had rented some movies from the library, so she was excited to watch them in the car!

There was more traffic on our way to PA than we had anticipated, so dinner was quite late and much past bedtime. She enjoyed dinner and seeing everyone.

The next morning it was time for the boys to go golfing and the girls to head to the spa! Allison got her first manicure! We have definitely started something with that! Now she notices when my fingernail polish is changed or updated, and always asks for hers to be changed.

You can't tell in the pictures, but Allison had the cutest outfit for the day. I was able to find a shirt that said, "I am a flower girl". So cute! She wore that to the salon so that everyone knew her role in the special day.
Next it was on to the rehearsal. She did great during the rehearsal and we had great expectations for the big day! That night we celebrated with dinner at Aunt Sue's house. Aunt Sue gave Allison a lovely Tiffany cross for her to wear on the big day. The next morning, we got up and played that morning and I did her hair in pigtails. I don't know why I bother trying to curl and set her hair. It looked so cute when we left Samantha's condo, only to have it straighten and fall out by the time we got to Aunt Sue's. Lesson learned for sure. After a couple of pictures, it was time to head to the church.

We got to the church in time to get some snacks to maintain blood sugar levels--the ceremony was at 1 pm, right during nap time! Then the ceremony started. I had the special job of lighting the family candles that eventually Aunt Sue used to light the unity candle with Russ. It was a lovely honor and I enjoyedhaving a part in the wedding ceremony. Next was the procession. Allison did great till about half way down the aisle. Then she really couldn't see anyone and started to panic. Stephanie didn't miss a beat and just walked up to her and grabbed her hand. From that she came down the end of the aisle and sat with Brent and I. Phew! What a relief. It was a big undertaking for a little two year old but she did great and Brent and I were so proud. After the ceremony and more pictures, it was time to boogie down at the reception. We were lucky enough to have Allison grab a nap during our car ride. She was a little cranky once she woke up, but once we pointed out to her where she could dance, it was on. She danced the entire time. A good solid 3 hours. I got tired of dancing and she would just keep grabbing my hand and telling me it was time to dance. When did I give birth to the Energizer bunny? After the reception, we headed to our hotel room and crashed. The next morning, we got up had breakfast with the newlyweds and family and headed back down to the Beltway. Shortly after getting home, Allison started to run a fever. We kind of knew it was coming, She was out of her routine, sleep deprived and just exhausted. Prime pickin' for a bug to set up shop. She only had a fever for about 24 hours, then the viral rash and last but not least back to healthy and happy Allison.

Mother's Day 2009

It was awesome! The day started with me waking up Brent to let him know that Allison was awake and I was hungry. ((Gotta milk it for what's it worth!)) He went downstairs with Allison and made me waffles with whipped cream and strawberries then brought it up to me to eat in bed. I wasn't alone, Allison thought it was pretty cool to eat breakfast in bed. Next were the gifts! Brent gave me a spa day at Elizabeth Arden--like a whole day. Massage or facial, manicure, pedicure--the works! Awesome!
Next were Allison's gifts. She and Brent made me a card and then wrote a list of "10 Reasons Why I Love My Mommy". Here they are:
1. Helps me read books
2. Helps me get dressed
3. Changes my pull ups
4. Puts me to bed
5. Cleans up after me
6. She plays with me
7. She gives the best hugs
8. She taught me to stay in my room until the alarm clock goes off
9. She takes me to swim and farm class
10. She teaches me to be a good girl

Brent assures me #'s 1-7 were all her and the others took a little prodding. So sweet. My eyes just filled up and in that second it was all worth it.

After that, we headed down to Dumfries for brunch with my Mom. It was very nice to just hang out at my Mom's house and not have to run anywhere else. We played, watched TV, ate snacks. It was a wonderful Mother's Day!

Makin' Cupcakes

My mom just got a cookbook from a coworker that is all about cupcakes. She let me borrow it last week, I showed it to Allison and of course we dove right in. I decided to use the still leftover Easter candy and make "Bug Cupcakes". Simple enough.

So, after Allison's nap, we got to baking. First, she helped me get out of all of the ingredients we needed. Next, it was Allison's job to place the muffin paper cups in each of the cupcake molds. She did this enthusiastically and even counted each one as she did it. We cracked our eggs and then had to wash our hands. Notice the acrobatics!

Soon it was time to use the mixer. Allison is a little cautious to appliances that make loud noises, but she quickly got into the act with the hand held mixer.

We then made two colors for our frosting, one green for grass and the other yellow for the sun "that isn't out today." Then we got to decorating--she didn't have much patience for the decorating part. She was much too interested in eating the icing and candy. But we managed to make some beetles out of jelly beans, caterpillars out of sweet tarts and marshmallows and then just some good ol M&M's and sprinkles. Yumm!

The latest thing

Most children have favorite blankets or stuffed animals that they like to sleep with. Allison has an ice pack. She INSISTS on sleeping with an ice pack wrapped in a kitchen towel every day and every night. I guess the only time she doesn't is when she is at school, or at least they haven't told me that she is sleeping with it. Weird toddler behavior.

Toddlers and Religion

This past Saturday was our goddaughter, Stephanie's First Holy Communion. Brent and I have sort of gotten away from going to church on Sundays--it's the whole lazy, we have a baby excuse. Lame, I know but we are working on it! I have talked to Allison about God and that he is responsible for the sun, moon, grass, etc. Just trying to keep it simple. I told Allison we were going to go to God's house on Saturday because he was having a special ceremony for Stephanie and her friends. Purposely avoided the whole bread / wine thing, we are not ready for that.
We were walking into church on Saturday, a bit nervous as to how this was all going to go with Allison in church and Allison in her 2 year old way announces that she does NOT like God and does NOT want to go to his house. Your natural reaction is of course to drop your chin to the ground in shock, but to her, God is just another guy with a lot of jobs and she didn't feel like hanging out with him. We got her into a pew--she thought it was neat that they had the Holy Water for "me to play in". Um, no.
She was awesome during the service. It totally helped that the church was full of unruly kids and toddlers and there was A LOT of singing.
Half way through the service, she looks at me and so sweetly and innocently asks, "Mommy, where's God? We are in his house and he isn't here". I didn't know what to say, just wanted to hug her. Allison is now talking about God and telling us that he is a big guy with a lot of jobs and that she sat on his lap. But God doesn't talk very much because he is too busy.
Precious.
